Background: Empathy is foundational in our intersubjective interactions, connecting with others across bodily, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. Previous evidence suggests that observing individuals in painful situations elicits whole bodily responses, unveiling the interdependence of the body and empathy. Although the role of the body has been extensively described, the temporal structure of bodily responses and its association with the comprehension of subjective experiences remain unclear.

Objective: Building upon the enactive approach, our study introduces and examines “bodyssence,” a neologism formed from “body” and “essence.” Our primary goal is to analyze the temporal dynamics, physiological, and phenomenological elements in synchrony with the experiences of sportspersons suffering physical accidents.

Methods: Using the empirical 5E approach, a refinement of Varela’s neurophenomenological program, we integrated both objective third-person measurements (postural sway, electrodermal response, and heart rate) and first- person descriptions (phenomenological data). Thirty-five participants watched videos of sportspersons experiencing physical accidents during extreme sports practice, as well as neutral videos, while standing on a force platform and wearing electrodermal and heart electrodes. Subsequently, micro-phenomenological interviews were conducted.

Results: Bodyssence is composed of three distinct temporal dynamics. Forefeel marks the commencement phase, encapsulating the body’s pre-reflective consciousness as participants anticipate impending physical accidents involving extreme sportspersons, manifested through minimal postural movement and high heart rate. Fullfeel, capturing the zenith of empathetic engagement, is defined by profound negative emotions, and significant bodily and kinesthetic sensations, with this stage notably featuring an increase in postural movement alongside a reduction in heart rate. In the Reliefeel phase, participants report a decrease in emotional intensity, feeling a sense of relief, as their postural control starts to reach a state of equilibrium, and heart rate remaining low. Throughout these phases, the level of electrodermal activity consistently remains high.

Conclusion: This study through an enactive approach elucidates the temporal attunement of bodily experience to the pain experienced by others. The integration of both first and third-person perspectives through an empirical 5E approach reveals the intricate nature of bodyssence, offering an innovative approach to understanding the dynamic nature of empathy.

One of the key goals of our paper was to initiate a dis- cussion on the way we define modern human behavior and use that definition to recognize its occurrence in the archaeological record. A second key goal was to identify critical flaws in the current research paradigm for in- vestigating modern human behavior and to begin to de- velop a new approach that is less ambiguous and more effective. The comments overwhelmingly indicate that current models for defining modern human behavior are badly in need of an overhaul.

Chase agrees with much of our critique and contrib- utes a cogent discussion of the different things “modern human behavior” can mean to Palaeolithic archaeolo- gists. He suggests that the concept may be overly bur- densome and should perhaps be replaced with a protocol whereby we examine the evolution of such things as symbolically organized behavior. This is a useful sug- gestion and may eventually rise to prominence in this debate. Alternatively, there may be a distinct suite of traits that, taken together, describe modern humans in a unique way relative to other hominids. For example, wildlife ecologists regularly describe the scope and va- riety of the anatomy and behavior of a species (e.g., Estes 1991), and these descriptions form the definition of that species relative to others.

Abstract// Is dream text length a proxy for dream length?/Curtiss Hoffman

/This is the result of a 34-month long longitudinal study of the author’s dreams.  The author has an unusually high dream recall frequency (average 45/month for 32 years), and during the period studied, from late June 2021 through April 2024, this increased to an average of over 75/month, for a total of 2,765 dreams over the course of 1,110 nights.  With some observed exceptions, the analysis showed that the percentage of nights with dream texts being consistently longer over the course of the night hovered around 70%, depending upon which measure was being used.  Two mitigating factors which offset this trend are discussed.  This tends to confirm findings from dream lab studies with much smaller N that suggest that dream text length does correlate – albeit loosely – with dream length.  To test the integrity of this data set, two random 1% samples of the ca. 16,000 dreams in the author’s dream database which were dreamt prior to the inception of the project were taken – before the author had formulated the idea that dream text length might be related to dream position and might be a proxy for dream length.  The results were slightly less definitive than for the dreams from the study period, but once the mitigating factors were taken into account, the majority of dreams in the random sample did follow the pattern, suggesting that it is valid, at least for the author’s dreaming.

To achieve longevity species have to evolve mechanisms to protect themselves from cancer. Selection against cancer is very strong at the reproductive age, as developing cancer in a young organism would cut its chance of successfully reproduction. However, as the force of selection diminishes with age cancer emerges as an age-related disease. Interestingly, several lifespan modulating pathways identified by genetic studies in model organisms are implicated in cancer progression, such as GH, IGF-1, mTOR, and AMPK signaling. In fact, cancer incidence in long-lived dwarf mice that have perturbed GH signaling is greatly reduced [17, 18]. Interestingly, downregulation of these pro-growth pathways has both anti-cancer and anti-aging effect, suggesting longevity and cancer resistance mechanisms may be synergistic, at least in some cases.

Statistically, cancer risk increases in large and long-lived species, as they have more cells and more time to accumulate mutations that lead to malignant transformation. However, species with longer lifespan tend to have lower incidence of cancer than short-lived species. This apparent paradox, known as Peto’s paradox [19, 20], suggests that large and long-lived species evolved more potent anti-cancer mechanisms to overcome the increased cancer risk. Multiple lines of evidence support this notion. It has long been known that mouse and rat cells are more susceptible to oncogenic transformation than human cells [21]. Cancer-related mortality can reach up to 90% in mice, which have a maximum lifespan (MLS) of 4 years [22]. In contrast, the similar-sized naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber), which has an MLS of 32 years, rarely develops cancer [23, 25, 26], furthermore naked mole rat cells are resistant to experimental tumorigenesis [27, 28]. Another long-lived rodent, the blind mole rat (Spalax sp.), with an MLS of 21 years, is extremely resistant to spontaneous cancer and chemical-induced tumorigenesis [29, 30]. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana), which is more than 200,000 times larger than a mouse and lives up to 65 years [16], has a strikingly low (4.81%) cancer mortality rate [31]. Recent studies focusing on cancer resistant species have revealed multiple novel anti-cancer mechanisms.

The presence of CRYPTOTYPES and the fact that we are unaware of their functioning, led Whorf later (Science and Linguistics, 1940) to conclude that thought is patterned by speech and therefore both thinking and speaking are influenced by the grammatical structure of our mother tongue. In general, Whorf‟s views on language touch upon the problem of reality and perception, logic and cognition. In his “Language and Logic” (1941), Whorf attempts to demonstrate that common logic is not universal but dependent on the language of the speaker. The average person does not realize the influential nature of linguistic structure on his cognitive processes. Whorf translated different languages into one another and obtained completely different structures and meanings. Some languages like Nootka (an American Indian language) do not divide their sentences into individual words. Whorf blames the Greeks for building up a contrast system and making it a law of reason, such as: Verb/Subject; Action/Actor, and Subject/Predicate. He says the European languages are built up on this contrast and consequently tend to objectivist phenomena. This “bipartition ideology of nature” common to European languages has influenced modern science in the way they “see actions and forces where it sometimes might be better to see states” (p.244). Therefore, Whorf cautions us not to accept the biased world view of a single language. He insists upon the necessity of analyzing many different language structures in order to correct the provisional analysis of reality and world view that western culture has imposed on modern science.
